What Are Upper Abdominal Pain Radiating To The Sternum And Back Suggestive Of?

my 80 year old father has had pain in his upper stomach....also pain right below his sternum and pain that goes to his right side to his back. We are wondering if this could be his appendix or if its indigestion. We live 1 hour from nearest hospital. He has had this off and on since last night around 6pm

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Pain due to infection/inflammation of the appendix would normally start on the right side of the abdomen.

It is possible that it may be indigestion or irritation of the stomach itself. The stomach is located in this region of the abdomen.
If he has a history of acid reflux then the indigestion or inflammation of the stomach is likely.
In some cases, where there is a history of severe reflux, there is the possibility of an ulcer of the stomach.

It may be best, if the pain is severe ,for him to be seen by his doctor for assessment and treatment.

I hope this helps
