What Blood Sugar Readings Are Considered Normal For A Type-1 Diabetic?

What are normal blood sugar readings for a type I diabetic? My 9-0 yr old father doesn t understand the numbers and I think he s doing something wrong. His reading today was 127 and he thinks that s too high. He s been eating a small can of tuna for lunch and swears the tuna is making his sugar go up. Sometimes his reading is 40-60 and he thinks that s good. I think it s too low. Help Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
I totally understand your concerns about your father's health:

The following points should be taken into consideration:
1-fasting glucose of 80 to 130 mg/dL
2-postprandial glucose (90 to 120 minutes after a meal) less than 180 mg/dL
3-You should monitor HbA1C level every 3 months.
4- Regarding the tuna : the following nutrition facts are important to know ( calories per 100 grams : 184, of which 0% are from carbohydrates), which means it is unlikely that the tuna can is making his blood sugar rise.
5- A reading of 40-60 is considered hypoglycemia (very low) and might lead to severe complications.
