What Can Be The Cause For The Wired Thinking During Sleep?

My 28 year old son wakes up, (usually a short time after falling asleep) he sees things like a witch or little aliens. Sometimes he thinks the walls are falling in on him. He says this has been happening to him for 10 years or so. He says he knows that it is not real but at the same time it is very disturbing to him. What could be causing this?
