I had open heart surgery approx. 1 yr ago toay.....The doctor fixed my mitral valve....I just saw my cardiologist last week & everything appeared to be alright.....But now I have a big red spot near the incision and I m very sore and I get chills...I have swelling in my right ankle & I have a burning feeling sometimes....I know something is definitely wrong...Should it be cause for alarm?

Hi,

thank you for providing the brief history of you. As mentioned by you about the history a thorough cardiac assessment is guided.

Also, if you have visited your cardiologist, has he recommended for any echocardiogram? if not, one can be take to make you help relax that nothing is wrong. Also, you may need the scar massage which will help the scar to loosen and also will help to reduce the redness.

Also, you have swelling of the ankle, for which the cardiologist must have provided you medicine for it. You can even keep the leg on the pillow elevated above the level of the heart to reduce the ankle swelling. Performing ankle toe movements at that time will help strengthen the calf muscles and also the venous return. Doing general exercises or undergoing cardiac rehabilitation protocol via physical therapy will help alot further for the cardio respiratory endurance. Also, post cardiac surgery it is recommended to undergo the physical therapy as to ensure the cardiac rehabilitation.

Exercises will also help to improve your metabolism and boost your immune system as well, which will help you avoid future infections and swelling of the ankle too.

You can discuss the same with the cardiologist, as i dont feel the redness and swelling are a major issue.

I wish you a speedy recovery.
