What Can Cause Recurrent Fever And Appetite Loss In A Child?

My 10 yr old son has had a mild off and on again fever for about a week (usually around 99 & 100 degrees, maybe as high as 101.9 - right now). His appetite is off and he is getting up and about but seems off/sluggish. Just today complaining of sore arm and neck. What are your thoughts?

Hi,

By what you say I feel that your son is experiencing recurrent viral illness. It is common in this age group.

I will explain to you how a viral illness behaves so that you can be more confident.

Fever of a few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
