What Can Cause Twitching Of Knee With Sharp Shooting Pain?

I had just gotten back from dinner and was changing into shorts and it felt like someone had just shot me in the knee. I fell to the floor almost instantly, and could barely get back up.I am able to put pressure on it, but I can NOT bend it at all and getting up from a seated position is almost impossible.I have no clue what happened. I do have it wrapped and I m trying not to move it, but my knee keeps twitching and making a shooting pain everytime.Any idea what happened??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.

You seem to have locked your knee.

It happens when a fragment of cartilage or meniscus gets stuck between the bones of the knee at the place where the thigh bone and leg bone rotate to cause straightening and bending of the knee. There is a muscle called popliteus which is responsible for this movement.

The most common cause is meniscal tear. It especially holds true if you are an active person and are involved in a lot of physical activities. It can also happen in osteoarthritis. An MRI of the knee joint will confirm it. Treatment depends on yhe degree of the tear. Small tears heal by themselves with adequate rest and immobilization, while larger tears may require surgery.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
