What Casues Severe Pain In The Abdomen?

HI , I have a question, my husband has intense abdominal pains that come and go, it even woke him up at 4am last night, it lasted a couple of hours but went away completely during the day. However, around 7pm it started up again, symptoms are passing a lot if gas (way worse than he normally does) diarreah and the sharp pains in his abdomen... What should I do to make him more comfortable ....are the symptoms bad enough to go consult ?
