The most common causes of persistent coughing are: (1) post nasal drip (2)GERD (3)asthma (4)non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis
Post nasal drip is the most common cause and some persons are not aware of the drip itself.
Non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis is also common can this can be diagnosed by a sputum (mucus) sample sent to the lab.
You can consider using an antihistamine/decongestant combination for at least 2 to 3 months (it can take a few weeks to start to work). This should be combined with a topical steroidnasal spray for the same period of time
Eg of the antihistamine/decongestant- benadryl d, claritine d, allegra d, zyrtec d Eg of the topical steroid spray- nasonex, nasocort, flonase, rhinocort
If it is the non eosinophilic bronchitis then steroid sprays would need to be used for approximately 1 month.
I hope this helps
