What Cause Heart Burn And Rapid Heart Rate During 22nd Week Of Pregnancy?

My wife is 22 weeks pregnant. At 6 weeks, the TSH level was 4.24. At 12 weeks it was TSH=5.5, FT3=4.44, FT4=14.34. However above tests (at 6 and 12 weeks) were done at different hospitals.
Doc started my wife on Thyronorm 25 mcg. At 18 weeks TSH=4.18.

However my wife has had the below symptoms during the last week
1. No sleep or just 1 hr sleep each day for the past 6 days except one day when she took Rivotryl .5mcg.
2. Shortness of breath after a meal
3. Feeling of rapid heartbeat at times
4. Heartburn

Would you advise to continue the Thyronorm? Is the above symptom related to the side effect of Thyronorm, if no, what else could be the reason?

She is taking Thyronorm in morning before breakfast, Calcium in afternoon and Pregnacare (Vitamins) + Orofer (Iron) after dinner.

Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Thyroid supplementation has to be started in second trimester of pregnancy if TSH levels are more than 3.5, so your doctor was right in starting the drug.
However, sometimes the dose needs to be adjusted according to the symptoms of the patient. Overdose of thyronorm leads to increased heart rate, palpitations, anxiety, feeling excessive heat, sweating and difficulty in sleeping. The symptoms in your wife are most probably due to drug overdose. However, such symptoms are also common in heart disease.
I would suggest you to repeat her TSH and free T4 values, and get the thyronorm dose adjusted accordingly.
If TSH values are normal, then do consult a cardiologist for getting her properly examined, investigated and treated accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

Dr Deepti verma
