What Caused Infection After Injection For Wet Macular Degeneration?
Hello, My mother (70) is being treated for a staph infection in her eye. She was routinely having injections for wet macular degeneration. Three days after one of the shots she developed this serious infection and they immediately treated her with a surgery to clean out the eye, next day vanco antibiotic eye drops every 15 min. for the entire day (very painful) and today she had an injection of vanco and an injection of a steroid for inflammation. My mom is so strong, the shots were very, very painful. My question is how did she get the infection? And what is the chance of it going systemic?
Hello It seems from the history that your mother is having treatment for macular degeneration by the use of intravitreal injections. She has probably developed infection in the form of endophthalmitis. The treatment is by use of intravitreal antibiotic injections and vitrectomy. The treatment is in right direction and hence with treatment the condition will improve. The chances of systemic spread of infection are very less.
Thank you
