What Caused Periods Despite Taking Pills To Delay Them?

I went on a trip out of the country and did not want to be on my period. My doctor started me on birth control and told me to skip the placebo pill. I have done this for 2 months. However, instead of skipping my period, I have had one now for 11 days and still going strong. Do I need to be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,

As your doctor stated, in the majority of persons, the period would have been delayed.

Some women, however, react differently to hormonal medications and can, unfortunately, get prolonged bleeding instead.

There is a medication that can help stop the bleeding eg norethisterone, you can consider seeing your doctor if the bleeding continues.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
