Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am an 80 year old female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism due to active nodules. Prescribed 2.5mg. of Methimazole daily. I suffer from IBS off and on and since I ve started Methimazole the IBS seems to have kicked in big time. Lots of gas and bloating. Can the Methimazole be be contributing to the problem? Thank You.
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. No, I don't think methimazole is the cause for your current worsening of IBS. In my opinion, hyperthyroidism related hormonal imbalance (high T3 and T4) is the cause for your bloating, gaseous feeling android worsening of IBS. So take methimazole to control hyperthyroidism. Alsop take propranolol (beta blocker). Take pantoprazole and levosulperide combination twice daily on empty stomach for bloating. Usually 15-20 days time is needed to regulate hormonal imbalance. Don't worry, you will be alright. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
