Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi my daughter is 4 weeks old and she weighed 2,6kg at birth. She had breathing problems and was diagnosed with kartagener syndrome which was preventing her from gaining weight. She was on Nan 1 but a dietician suggested feeding her prenan and she started gaining, she now weighs 3,3 kg. My question is how long should I feed her Prenan for? And what formula to give her after prenan?
** 1. Kartagener [also called as immotile ciliary] syndrome is a rare 'autosomal recessive' disease caused by a gene defect and mainly causes abnormalities of the respiratory tract [due to immotile cilia resulting in poor mucociliary clearance]
2. there is currently no treatment/cure for the said syndrome and because child with this syndrome are more prone towards pneumonia/infections thus therapeutic aim should be to get them immunized against them and when they grow avoidance of tobacco and regular exercise should be included in their daily regime
3. PRE-nan: usually means formula given to PREmature babies which help them to gain weight, and can be given upto 6 months, thereafter one can opt for Nan Pro 2 [follow up formula powder]
PS. remember breast milk [breast feeding] is best for growth, development, immunity and bowel movement of the child, so by taking a healthy diet, plenty of fluids/rest you can increase the milk secretion
