Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having TMJ symptoms. I have a night guard but there has been this pea sized lump below the jaw joint. My TMJ is also getting worse instead of better. It's getting more and more difficult to open my jaw, which is not good because I'm a singer. Any idea what this might be? I did do a round of antibiotics and steroids to see if it was an infection, which it was not.
A per your complain a lump under the jaw joint can be due to protrusion of the head of the mandible due to dislocated mandible.. If it is not the case then the swelling can be due to swollen lymph node or swelling into the parotid gland that lie in that location, so for this proper clinical examination and x rays has to be done for diagnosis and treatment can be done according to cause..
In case if the TMJ is not improving then you need to get a Panoromic x ray done under supervision of oral physician and get evaluated and he can advised another properly fabricated mouthguard and along with it you can be advised a combination of anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and muscle relaxant like Chlorzoxasone..
You can also be advised Physiotherapy, steroid injection and also warm or cool compresses depending on cause..
As of now take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and along with it take a soft diet and avoid excess mouth opening like during chewing, laughing, yawning etc..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
