Hello,
You seem to have suffered an ankle sprain due to inward twisting of food. It results in
severe pain and swelling of foot.
To those who come to my clinic with similar symptoms, I recommend the following:
1) X-ray foot to rule out fractures
2) Conservative therapy consists of
Rest
Ice
Compression and
Elevation
Protective devices
3) Protective devices include air splints or plastic and Velcro braces
4) NSAIDs like
ibuprofen and
Naproxen daily twice for 14 days
5) To reduce gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 mg once daily before food
6) Tab.
Acetaminophen can be taken twice daily
7)
Physical therapy during recovery phase to strengthen the muscles and relieve pain
Recovery phase (3 d to 2 week post injury) include the following:
1) Full, pain-free active and passive ROM (range of movements)
2) No pain or tenderness
3) Strength of ankle muscles 70-80% of that on the uninvolved side
4) Ability to balance on 1 leg for 30 seconds with eyes closed
If pain and swelling don't decrease in 3-4 days, please do consult an orthopedic surgeon.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
