What Causes A Biliary Obstruction?

My granddaughter has been told there is blockage in the liver. How can that be and what is the remedy? She is 36 yrs old. Her mom died at 48 from cancer, so naturally I am very concerned! Could a gall stone travel from the gall bladder to the liver?
