What Causes A Brief Loss Of Consciousness While Having High Blood Pressure?

Was speaking with a 70 year old male while sitting in the hospital when he suddenly, without dropping his head, relaxed all facial muscles and appeared to be totally asleep. This lasted approximately 30 seconds. Then, he opened his eyes and asked, what was I saying? When questioned, he said that that had not happened before. He has a history of heart problems as well as high blood pressure.I am sure that had this happened while driving, he would have been in an accident. Any referral?
