What Causes A Bunion Post Surgical Repair Of A Hammer Toe?

I had a hammer toe repaired surgically, the one next to the big toe, and after surgery I ended up with a bunion. The surgeon first told me that I must have had it before, but when I told him to look at the before and after surgery x-rays, he saw that I was correct. Can you tell me why this happened during the surgery that was for a hammer toe, not even anything wrong with the big toe. Now I am stuck having to go for more surgery. Any ideas as to what may have happened.?

General Surgeon 's  Response
A bunion of the big toe occurs when the toe is laterally deviated and the metatarso-phalengial joint becomes prominent, and causes discomfort while wearing a foot wear and while ambulation. If is very distressful, it needs surgical correction. If not it can be accommodated by wearing shoes with broad toe box which will accommodate the deformity. There are also silicon toe caps available which will to an extant correct the deformity as long as you are using the toe cap. The possible reason why you developed bunion of the big toe after surgery for hammer toe of the 2nd toe is that during surgery, the bone alignment was not perfect, and the 2nd toe was deviating laterally. This is the most possible reason of the cause of the bunion of the big toe after 2nd hammer toe corrective surgery.
