What Causes A Dark Patch On The Edge Of The Tongue?

I have a dark patch on the side of the front of my tongue which I noticed some months ago. It felt like a lump but not sore? I have showed it to my doctor and it is currently being monitored by my Dentist for the last 3 weeks, I am due to return to him next week. I am very concerned as I feel a strange sensation sometimes on my tongue. Could this be anything to worry about? Regards Genny

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Looking to the history there are few possibilities of having this type of painless patch since long.
1, having sharp teeth near that part of tongue giving continuous friction producing minor trauma on the tongue.
2,If you have habit of chewing of tobacco or smoking can also give rise to this patch.
Consult oral surgeon and get clinical evaluation of your problem.
Do Listerine or Feel fresh gargles.
Ok and take care.
