Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 54 year old woman who has a 3 to 4 centre metre dermoid cyst on her right ovary. It was discovered by accident, is not cancerous (I had the c125 cancer marker test and an MRI) but I have read that a cyst of this type can only turn cancerous if it is located on an ovary. I have also read that allot of woman notice weight loss after one is removed. I haven t been the same since I had my last child, 22 years ago, I can t lose weight and basically have to eat crumbs to loss any. I m seeing a dietician and keeping a food log and she says I eat well and I also exercise. I am on no medication and have normal blood pressure etc. My gynaecologist says I should leave the cyst alone. I do get pain from it but in short bursts now and again. Allot of woman have stated that they hadn t realized that they didn t feel well until the cyst is removed. What should I do? I need a second opinion. Thank you so much. Kindest regards Maxine
This is indicating ovarian cysts which are common and may be single, multiple or may occur as a part of polycystic ovarian syndrome. At this point there is no need to be worried but further steps are required to ruled out malignancy completely. It means that CT scan or diagnostic laparoscopy should be done to evaluate it more accurately.
Generally, cysts should be managed surgically i cysts are larger than 5cm, bleeding cysts, torsioned or ruptured and it means that cysts became complicated and may cause specific pain. Also, if there is polycystic syndrome as underlying cause then hormonal therapy is indicated. Pain is usually placed deep in pelvis on affected side and may be associated with nausea and fever. I am sure that this will be just a benign cyst at the end but these further steps are required to ease your minds.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
