Hi, My name is Kory and I have a question. I am almost thirty years old and I have had a lump in the back of my neck on the left side below my skull since I i was seventeen (mom said i had it when i was thirteen ). Its never really bothered me nor has it grown at all. Its about the size of a small grape and is squishy/firm on the outside but hard on the inside. I do have insurance but the deductible is ridiculous (5,000$) and my insurance only pays 50% afterwards. I am a father of two and i am married and money is extremely tight in my family. I make under 30,000 a year and i am the money maker of the family. I can barely pay bills. Recently i have had two panic attacks and have been scared about everything and anything since. Not sure why either because i am a relatively laid back guy. Im just wondering if this is something to look into asap or is it nothing serious sounding?
Based on the details you gave, it must be lipoma. Lipoma is a fatty lump grows between the skin and the muscle. Since it lies under the skin with a defined capsule covering, it is movable. It is a non cancerous lesion. It should be treated only, if there is pain in the lump. Sometimes, lipoma may be excised for cosmetic reason. Other probability is the sebaceous cyst. But over the period of more than ten year, it must have pain and discharge. Lipoma can be easily diagnosed. Sometimes, it need to be confirmed with biopsy.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
