What Causes A Hard Lump Outside Both Knees?

I have a hard lump on the outside of both my knees. Have had them for 15 years and in the past 3 years its become very painful to sit still, stand and pops every time I move it out of the bent position. (Not sure that the popping has anything to do with it). It s also very tender to the touch and brushing up against something can drop me to the floor. Im in constant pain. Have not injured it but have played a lot of contact sports. Any info would be helpful.
