What Causes A Hard Red Area On The Calf With Bruising On The Ankle?

My spouse has a slightly reddened, hard and tender area on his calf. Then he is black and blue, bruised down by the ankle. The bruising appeared three days ago and has spread the last two days to around the ankle and across the top of the foot. The pain has been going on for two weeks. He had no apparent injury that he can recall.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The hard red area on calf indicates inflammation involving some sort of sebaceous cyst or other soft tissue lesion. The bruising on ankle with swelling across top of the foot indicates spreading cellulitis through the primary infection in subcutaneous space. However, if you can provide me a photo picture of the culprit area, I can focus further precisely in this regard.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
