Hi My 19 yr old daughter just gave blood today at her college. She said the ones drawing blood really had trouble and kept moving the needle around while it was in her arm. This happened more than once and after seeing that the blood was slow, they suspected a clot and cautioned my daughter to remain perfectly still while removing the needle. Removal was very painful. Now she has a bulge the size of a golfball and cannot bend or move her arm at all. What is wrong and what should she do? I told her to go to the ER immediately.
Hi, It is a blood clot. I cannot say whether the clot is due to puncturing vein or artery. It is possible that either could have been punctured to lead to such a big lump. Either way, she will require management with compression, Thrombophob ointment and limb elevation. The swelling should slowly come down and all would be fine. Do not worry. In a few days it will be alright. Take care, Dr Rishi, New Delhi, India.
