What Causes A Lump Next To Spine After A Fall?

Our 3 year old somehow fell in our hallway, we have baseboard heating and there was an easel kids use (plastic) to the side. We aren t exactly sure how she fell, possibly running with socks on or got footing stuck on easel. She cried, I ran downstairs scooped her up I noticed right away on her back a bump so I put ice on it. She calmed down & seemed fine but I did notice a bump & some bruising starting right next to her spine. My husband looked at it & thought it would become a bruise but didn t think she needed to be looked at. She had stopped crying didn t want ice was waking & wanting to play etc. within 15-20 mins. Hasn t exhibited any limitations or complained of pain(tho she does have a high pain tolerance) This was probably 4 days ago. It has gone down and the bruising on the lump is turning that yellowish outer area like it s going away. There is still a lump tho but not as big. My daughter has been complaining off and on her belly hurts. I m not sure if it s related - husband says she hdnt complained to him & thinks she does say it to me to possibly get attention or get into our bed at night. It doesn t always work with me so I m not sure that s it. I wonder if the two are related. Another Mom mentioned her kids have been sick high fever sore throats & wondered if her belly pain could be related to being sick from strep (strep has been going around in the area) I had never heard of that. The mom mentioned you can have cases with complaints of a sore belly from strep. She did have a sore throat weeks ago along with head congestion from cold. I m wondering If I should be concerned about a lump next to spine after the fall she had& if I should get it looked at or if there are things I should be looking for that she definitely be looked at by dr. She s a rough and tumble type of kid always falling playing rough it seems, her knees haven t healed from the scrapes she keeps getting in over a month poor kid. And I m a worry wart - try not to go to dr for everything. With her we d probably be there every day. But it s the spine so I m second guessing whether I should ve rushed her to Dr.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Possible hematoma formation due to collection of blood beneath the skin layers. My guidelines at present:
- Local application of ice
- Prescription of antibiotics as Cephalexin, Amoxicillin with Clavulanic acid or others
- Anti-inflammatory medicines as Diclofenac with Serratiopeptidase

Regular follow up with doc and periodic evaluation is must as many of the cases do require an incision and drainage procedure to cure this.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
