What Causes A Lump On The Shin After An Injury?

Today we were playing field hockey and someone hit the ball and I was standing right in from of them so the incredibly hard ball hit me right in the shin as soon as the ball hit me I looked to see if something had happened and there was already a massive lump right where the ball hit me. Why?

Hi, swelling preceded by trauma is usually a constant association. That is due to oedema and inflammation. But it could be associated with a fracture of the bones underneath.
If you have pain and difficulty to move the injured part associated with swelling, I would advice you to get an x Ray done to rule out fracture. In case, fracture is present, immobilisation, cast application and pain killers with antibiotics are advised depending on the type of fracture( comminuted fractures need internal stabilisation with nails and plates).
If there is not fracture, application of ice and pain killers help to reduce swelling and pain respectively.
