What Causes A Lump Under Sternum?

I ve noticed within the last 4 years, a mass getting larger at the bottom of my sternum, above where stomach begins. When I suck my stomach in, it bulges out and you can see it. Had MRI done & Ultrasound but nothing came out of it. I ve lost 35 lbs in the last year and it seems to be larger. Any explanation would be great...

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

I suggest you do an ultrasound of this lump to see its structure. Since you noticed it this morning, probably its an epigastric hernia or a diastasis recti. Both these conditions can be diagnosed by physical exam and ultrasound will give extra information. Also a lipoma (growth of fat cells) is an option. We will know more after you do a physical exam and an ultrasound of this lump. I suggest to not rub it anymore, because since we don't know what it is, we don't know if rubbing will make it worse or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
