What Causes A Lung Collapse After An Accident?

My daughter was in a terrible accident, and has head trauma. She has been in the NICU for two weeks now. She has a Trach and is breathing on her own. Today her lung collapsed and they put her back on the breathing machine because she has pneumonia. Is this common for the lung to collapse?
