What Causes A Painful And Tender Lump On The Head?

I have noticed a hard lump that hurts slightly and feels tender to touch a few days ago. I never hit my head or anything but it s located on the right side of my head around an inch to the right and 3 inches above my ear. Over the past few days it seems to have decreased in size but it still is present. Help!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Your description sounds like a possible abscess or folliculitis.

*do you have any itching or hair loss over the area?
*any fever or headaches?
*any bumps anywhere else on the body
*any history or dermatitis?

I recommend :
-keep the area clean and dry.
-avoid manipulation of the area and be careful when you comb you hair.
-apply cool compresses to see of it helps with the the pain.
-if you notice any sign of infection like redness over area, pus, local warmth or fever, please seenyour doctor right away.

If you are able to assess it on your own, the monitor it everyday. Take photos, for records, if possible.
If not, I suggest you consult a dermatologist or physician just to make sure it doesn't need treatment.

As long as it is reducing and not bothering you, let it be.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
