What Causes A Painful Lump At The Base Of The Thumb?

I was having pain while holding a pen when I rubbed my hand I noticed a knot on the back of my hand below index finger and base of thumb by lunch time it was a lump,painful about the size of a half dollar,tender to touch and is difficult to completely open hand

it can be a ganglion. requires to be examined by surgeon.can be apply ed crepe bandage to keep it under pressure so that it subsides.
