What Causes A Painful Lump In The Groin Area?

I am a 66-year-old woman and I have a large hard lump under the skin in my pubic area. While not extremely painful, it is tender to the touch. It seems stationary and is very firm. The skin around it is slightly inflamed but I think that is because I have been trying to (unsuccessfully) drain it, using tissue and peroxide. I discovered the lump 12 months ago and it has grown a little since then. Should I be concerned?
