What Causes A Painful Lump In The Leg After An Injury?
Hello I was after an opinion if at all possible. My 8 year old daughter tripped over and landed with her bottom on top of her foot at school yesterday. She has been mostly fine but has limped and complained every few hours and has complained of aching pain at night. Now today there is a prominent lump on the lateral side of her foot. Xray services are not available here over the weekend so I have booked her in to the gp in 2 days time. Is this likely to be a fracture? Is there anything that I can do to lessen damage over the next 2 days if it is?
The symptoms you have mentioned suggestive of a hematoma. It is nothing but a collection of blood under the skin following a blunt trauma. You don't need to worry regarding this as it will subside by it own even without treatment. You can take simple analgesics like ibuprofen or diclofenac for pain. Apply ice packs over the affected area for symptomatic relief and fasten the recovery. You can also try anti inflammatory drugs like seratiopeptidase for decreasing the inflammation and to reduce the swelling. Most cases resolve in few days with these measures, if the symptoms persist despite all these take an X-ray to rule out minor fractures or contusion.
