What Causes A Painful Rash With Foul Smell On The Back?

My husband has a rash on his back that hurts to touch...a sharp stabbing pain...not itchy at all. It smells bad....could it be shingles. It is getting bigger every day. He has been under a lot of stress at work also. He has had the chicken pox as a child.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It might be Shingles. It should be treated with Antiviral medication as soon as possible. So, My advice is to consult the dermatologist immediately for confirming the diagnosis and to initiate treatment as soon as possible. Early treatment reduces the chances of a condition called post herpetic neuralgia (pain over healed shingles lesion).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
