What Causes A Painful Swelling In The Throat?

Began to develop a painful swelling in my throat.......had some gumbo with shellfish about 2:30. I am only thinking a possible reaction because of the sudden swelling and a friend of mine developed this in his 50's. I am 50 and have never had a problem with any seafood. I have no rash or hives. Thanks

Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

Looking at your symptoms,thete can be two possibilities for the swelling in the throat after eating shellfish:
1.)Allergic reaction to the shellfish:it may lead to swelling of the throat.It may lead to blockage of airway and difficulty in respiration.In such a case,you need to go to an emergency doctor.In such a case,Injection Steroid and Antihistaminic needs to be given.
2.) Inflammation in the throat due to mucosal injury caused by shellfish-it may lead to inform the throat.In such a case,you will get relief by taking Analgesic with Antiinflammatory like Ibuprofen and Antacid like Rantac.

So,it would be advisable to consult a Doctor as soon as possible.
