What Causes A Pressure Pinching Sensation Behind The Head?

Hi Doctor, I have a spasm or pressure pinching sensation right behind the ear on lower part ofback of my head. Its like a spasm that comes and goes every 10 to 30 seconds or sometimes after a minute. Its been going on for over 24 hours now. I every once in a while sometimes get the same thing on the side of my rib.. Maybe a nerve or something? Tried icing it this morning but seems like made it worse. Can you help?

Hi,

The pressure pinching sensation behind your ear and in the lower part of your head might be related to occipital neuralgia or TMJ disorder either a dental problem.

Occipital neuralgia is a pain caused by a pinched nerve of the neck, from arthritis or from keeping your head in certain positions for a long time.

TMJ disorder is generally accompanied by pain when chewing, but it can also be referred to as a pain behind the ear.
- You can continue using ice packs, or heat in your neck and in the pain area.
- You can also use painkillers (Ibuprofen)
- Try to massage the area where it seems to have a spasm.

If the pain doesn't improve, or increases, you have to see a doctor for a physical exam and other examinations if needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suela Gjata,
