What Causes A Red Itchy Spot On The Palate In An Ex-smoker?

I have one single red spot circular in look, not hard, size of a eraser, on soft palate in center of roof of mouth, no pain, only slight itch I noticed a few weeks ago..... Normally wouldn t be worried but this little spot was there in march and was smaller, it DID go away but now it s back. I am 31 years old, former pack a day smoker, quit smoking 5 months ago cold turkey, been worried. Could this be oral cancer? I took a picture but cant send on here....

Hello,

I can understand your concern. It is difficult to advise on the lesion without clinically seeing it. However, before thinking of worse, it could be an apthous ulcer or injury due to hot or food substance that may have caused friction in the palate.

I would advise you to use local Benzocaine gel (Mucopain) over the area 3-4 times a day and continue that for 10 days. If the ulcer heals then there is nothing to worry about as cancerous ulcers do not heal with local treatment.

However, if the ulcer persists for 2 weeks, then you should see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and might need to go for biopsy of the lesion to reach exact diagnosis and to know if the ulcer is cancerous or not.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
