What Causes A Red Prominent Indentation On The Tongue?

Good evening Doctor, I noticed a fairly obvious groove or split in the center of my tongue a few days ago, it s toward the front and can get irritated by certain foods. It appeared rather suddenly. I use listerene regularly, is this may be too harsh- not sure??? Sometimes it looks red in the groove, thank you for any thoughts, Rick

Hello,

You have symptoms of red prominent indentation on the tongue which occurs when papillae become irritated and slightly swollen which seems to be due to stress, hormonal changes, or acidic and spicy food and might be due to dehydration.

I would suggest you do warm saline rinses two to three times a day. Coat indentations with an antiviral ointment containing Acyclovir. It generally doesn’t require treatment and clears up within ten days. Drink plenty of liquids and vitamin supplements. Maintain good oral hygiene and drink plenty of water. If the condition doesn't get better in a few days, then consult oral pathologist for a proper checkup, and rule out a condition like herpes or canker sore.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
