Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was sitting outside (in the sun) about three days ago and noticed literally right before my eyes a reddish brown splotch (best word to describe it...about an inch in width, and less than half inch length) appeared. It does not hurt or itch, but beneath it, and around it is a lighter pink area that seems to be spreading. The red splotch is irregular shaped and looks similar to a scab..but to touch it it is not. Should I be concerned? Thanks.
Pterygium : Nature pterygium is a triangular lump of tissue on the white of the eye that eventually stretched over the cornea. On the outside it may look scary, but it is not cancer. Although it is not a serious illness, it can cause unpleasant symptoms. You may feel uncomfortable when there is something in the eye. Or it may become red and irritated and need medical or surgical treatment.
Causes of disease:
-UV(in the sunshine)
-Pollen
-Sand
-Smoke
-Wind
To prevent: -Wear sunglasses everyday. -A hat with a brim when working in the sunshine. -Use artificial tears everyday.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Chung Luu, General & Family Physician
