Hello,

The vein from the leg that is harvested for bypass surgery is the main vessel through which blood is sent back to the heart from the legs. After removal it takes a while for collaterals to form (alternate routes).

In this period, there could be swelling and stretching of the leg and a condition known as stasis dermatitis from the pooling of blood. This is probably what your husband is going through. I would suggest using some lotion like Lacto Calamine to moisturize the leg. Ensure that the leg is kept clean and dry. He can elevate it on a pillow when he sleeps to improve the return of blood at night.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
