What Causes A Sharp Pain On The Right Side Of Head?

I am getting a sharp pain on the right side of my head near my temple. It s a split second flash of a pain but it feels like I m being stabbed by an exacto knife and then it goes away. I ve been meaning to go to the Doctor. I was going to head to Urgent Care this eve. Would this be part of stress or the onset of an aneurysm? It s been happening for months. Obviously if I were more concerned I would have gone sooner. For some reason I now feel I should go.

Hello,

It would have been better if you mentioned your age in this question. The symptoms seems to be due to trigeminal neuralgia. It is usually caused by irritation of trigeminal nerve. The irritation can be caused by nerve compression by a nearby artery or vein. Secondary causes for the same are tumor, cysts or damage to myelin sheaths. In most of the cases it is due to compression by nearby artery or vein.

The pain of trigeminal neuralgia is described as one of the most excruciating pain. It is usually felt as a electric shock in face, usually limited to one side of face and can be triggered during washing face or brushing or putting make up. It is a neurogenic pain and drugs like Gabapentin and some anti-seizure drugs are used for treatment. If the pain persists then surgical decompression is done. We should always rule out tumors, cysts and myelin sheath disorders.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
