Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Wife had small dark spot on her lip, but it was totally flat with no blister appearance or liquid. Nurse friend of hers believes it not to be a cold sore. Spot is healing up pretty quickly, but her upper lip is still having a bit of a burning sensation. Coincidentally, she began her period 2 days ago. She has never really had this type of marking or bump. Can this be menstrual related? Thanks.
Small dark spot on her lip could be menstrual related because of change in hormonal balance but other causes could be the possible options like it can be due to -Lip licking -Vit.B2 deficiency -Smoking -Overexposure to sun or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The treatment includes various skin creams like hydroquinone, azelaic acid, corticosteroids, tretinoin cream and laser treatment.Apply hydroquinone cream on this scar and it should go away in a few days to months.
Also take some vit B12 supplements and avoid lip licking. Also apply a good lip balm and sunscreens with spf 30 atleast half an hour before going out in sun.
If still the symptoms do not improve then please get a clinical examination done by a dermatologist.Bacterial and fungal infections have to be ruled out.
Avoid stress, drink plenty water and rest properly.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
