What Causes A Tight Sensation In The Feet?

The ligaments in my legs and feet will tighten to a point where they are sticking up and hard. It is happening at different intervals and different sections from ankle to calf and from knee to upper thigh on the inside of my leg. When the y finally loosen, that area is sore for hours to days afterward. What is the possible cause. I am not a diabetic. Also when I use my hands to work on a project ( I am a wood carver) my fingers will stiffen and have to be massaged to relax.
