What Causes Abdominal Bloating After Having Food?

Hi. I m 19 years old and wanted to know if this is normal. When I wake up in the morning I have a flat stomach, i always weigh myself every morning. Almost always the same. 96-97 pounds. I m moderatley healthy.. I eat right and consume as less junk food as I can. However a couple of weeks ago I noticed a change. I become EXTREMELY bloated after I eat. I could just wake up and have a bowl of cereal and become bloated and look as if i m 4 months pregnant! And it gets bigger threw out the day. I never normally have this problem.. I am usually constipated but when I tried prune juice and was going reguarly i still noticed the big and hard stomach. I am not pregnant as I take birth control and have not missed one yet. What could this be? IBS?

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Stomach bloating is caused mainly because of air swallowing known as erophagia.

Other causes are irritable bowel syndrome IBS or dyspepsia or constipation or may be drug induced etc.

You should undergo routine blood investigations with urine and stool examination for R/M and ova or ultrasound of abdomen or upper GI scopy if required to detect the exact underlying cause if the problem is troublesome and since long time.

It is good that you usually eat light and consume as less junk food as you can with cereals.

So,if you are taking light food daily and still having abdominal bloating or distension then you should start some medication like proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole or rabeprazole),avoid excess carbohydrates and fatty foods, avoid oily and spicy foods.

If you still have these problems then you should go to gastroenterologist to treat underlying cause.

Thanks and Regards,
