What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Constipation After Taking Aspirin?

I stopped taking 81 mg asprin/ 2x daily on March 20th after taking for 30 days following hip replacement surgery. For pain relief from surgery I took nucenta for 2 weeks and then Xstrength Tylenol 650 mg 2x daily. If needed I used Aleve. I have not had any NSAIDs for 2 weeks. But tummy troubles and gut problems started, March 18, bloating, aching stomach and gut, reflux, constipation/ hard stool. I eat a Mediterranean, anti-inflammatory diet, drink water, green tea-turmeric tea and coffee with breakfast and get 1 hr of exercise daily;) Could I have an ulcer from asprin use?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Aspirin can also contribute to the formation of peptic ulcers. These are sores that develop in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum.

Ulcers can cause considerable GI irritation and discomfort, with abdominal pain being the most common symptom. Nausea, vomiting, bloating and loss of appetite are possible effects as well.

It is always better to take aspirin with milk or food to help reduce possible stomach irritation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
