What Causes Abdominal Bloating While Suffering From IBS?

I have had what I now know to be a rectocele grade 2 for a number of years. I have IBS too. I bloat almost all the time. I have tried to deal with this and Osteoarthritis on my own for sometime now. My sex life is poor as I always seem to have pressure in my rectum which kills any sex drive. I never complete a bowel movement and I have now started to insert my finger into my anus and pull the opening upward to help ease out my poo. This procedure leaves me feeling vile but much more comfortable. My stomach is so bloated I look 9 months pregnant a lot of the time which is very uncomfortable. My body is in pain due to the arthritis which by the way runs in my family. I am 53 and up until about 7/8 years ago was managing to do circuit training but noticed about 17 years ago various changes in my body were making my sport much more difficult. I was playing tennis but stopped to rest what I believed to be tennis elbow. A few years later played a little badminton but sharp pain in elbows still there, so stopped. Carried on the circuits until I had to stop this due to plantarfachitus (poor spelling), over a year I limped. Once over that hurdle, foot still hurt but much better until my other foot began to hurt. Went on for a while but getting more and more frustrated. Went to Doctors. Told to take my shoes off and walk to the other side of the room. Doctor said in a very flippant way, Looks alright to me . I was angry with her response and upset. Did not do anything for me. A few years later my frustration at not being able to do my sports that I love so much grew. Saw another Doctor who referred me to a Rhumatologist (sorry again for spelling). He looked at me but I felt he did not see how much I was suffering. I was very upbeat to his questions but felt I was wasting his time. He sent me for X-rays but said he didn t need to see me again and would send results to my Doctor. The Radiologist seemed surprised at this whilst he did a course of X-rays. Rang Doctors for results but time a time again was told results had not been received. They were there, I found out sometime later and was told a Doctor would ring me. He did and said I had Osteoarthritis and to take paracetomal tablets when and if I was in pain. I could go on but all I can say now is that I am upset, frustrated and feel my quality of life as it was 17 years ago has gradually gone down hill. I am so confused as to what I should do now, I just feel that because I look healthy, I am not taken seriously. What should I do now?

Hi,

Certain degree of bloating is normal but in case of excessive bloating it may be sign of food allergy, hiatal hernia ,IBS or inflammatory bowel diseases. So you should do gastroenterologic work up but first try to change your dietary habits, it means: eat smaller meals but more frequently, avoid fried and spicy food, take menta tea, avoid alcohol and coffee, eat probiotics and milk products, boiled food and vegetables. Also, there are medications such as Flobian,Magnesium oxide or certain Laxatives which may relieve such symptoms of this continue. If there wont be improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry and food allergy testing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
