What Causes Abdominal Cramps After Starting Birth Control Pills?

I recently started birthcontrol again and took it for seven days without having sex. On the seventh day I had unprotected sex. But on the 6th day, I took the pill at night instead of the morning. One day after sex I am experiencing menstral like cramps. Can I be pregnant?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Once birth control pills are initiated, a certain duration of time has to pass to allow the pills to start acting. Before this, even if you have started BCP, they may not prevent conception. You seem to have had unprotected sexual intercourse a little too early and so it would be wise to get a home pregnancy test conducted repeatedly (every alternate day or every 3 days), until pregnancy is completely ruled out.

If pregnancy is confirmed, discontinue the pills and report to your doctor immediately. But if it is ruled out, then your symptoms were most probably due to the initiation of birth control. It would be best to visit a doctor at this point of time.

Best wishes.
