What Causes Abdominal Cramps And Bleeding During Pregnancy?

Hello, I am 36 years old, have Hypothyroidism, and just recently took a home pregnancy test and found out I am pregnant. I am worried for this pregnancy (approximately almost 6 weeks along) because I am cramping and bleeding. I am concerned and afraid I may be having a miscarriage. Should I go to the ER? The receptionist is new at OBGYN clinic and didn t seem to take this seriously whatsoever. She scheduled me for Thursday and I don t know if I can wait this long!! Please help.

Hello.

If you have frank bleeding, it is a medical emergency and needs to be attended to immediately. As you susoect, you may indeed be having a miscarriage.

If it is not bleeding but only spotting, or slightly brownish discharge, you need not worry as sometimes this is normal. The blood vessels in the vagina become larger than normal due to oregnancy hormones and their rupture can cause this discharge. It does not always come from the cervix or uterus.

Hope this helps.

Dr Geeta
