What Causes Abdominal Cramps And Gastritis While On ClearLax?

I was constipated so I took clear lax - went 10 times the next day. Contnued taking it once a day for a week. I went very little each but I had awful gas cramps/ Two days after I stopped taking - I was in bed and I felt something coming out of my vagina - like a mucous I had no control over - it was thick and smelled terrible. It is still draining - what would that be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Clear lax contains polyethylene glycol which is an osmotic-type laxative. It works by holding water in the stool to soften the stool and increases the number of bowel movements. Nausea, abdominal cramps and bloating or gas can occur with the drug.

You should stop the drug since you have passed loose stools many times a day.

Maintain healthy fibre diet and plenty of fluids in the following days to avoid constipation.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General and Family Physician
