What Causes Abdominal Cramps During First Semester Of Pregnancy?

I am 41 and and pregnant. I thought I was 7 weeks based on LMP of 12/22. My hcg levels are rising very slowly-- today they were 2300, 3 days ago they were 2100. I am cramping some but not bleeding. Is there still hope or it is it inevitable that I will miscarry? I had an us yesterday and they measured me at 5wk 3 days- no heartbeat could be seen.
