What Causes Abdominal Cramps While Suffering From PCOS?

I am not due for my period for about another 2 1/2 wks, but have cramping. I m not sexually active currently, have PCOS which I take metformin for. Have never had any cysts that I know of, just acne and weight gain....is this cramping likely from the PCOS?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Cysts are often caused by hormonal imbalance . As you mentioned that you are having weight gain and acne ( due to pcos ) and taking metformin ( drug of choice ).
But you are having abdominal cramps .
There are ovaries on both side of flanks and abdominal cramps is charactritstic feature of PCOS( BESIDE OTHERS ).
So abdominal cramps are common need not to worry .
Sometimes few doctors also prescribe hormonal treatment ( oral pills i.e. birth control ).
So take complete treatment and you will get relief in cramps.
Sometimes amoebic colitis may be the cause of cramps .
If you are having severe pain then get in ultrasound of abdomen.
Good luck.
